Matakohe Limestone Island is a 36-hectare environmental restoration in the heart of Whangārei Terenga Paraoa, Whangārei Harbour.
Friends of Matakohe Limestone Island (FOMLI) is a not-for-profit community group that, along with mana whenua, Te Parawhau, acts as the island’s Kaitiakitanga (custodians).
Before 1989, the Island was a near-barren, degraded pasture. Thanks to the help of a wide range of volunteers and sponsors, Matakohe Limestone Island is now a vibrant and regenerating coastal broadleaf forest, a must-do attraction in Whangārei, and the home of Northland’s only kiwi creche.
The sanctuary on Matakohe Limestone Island is open to the public and school groups often visit to learn about New Zealand’s native wildlife and conservation. The island can be reached by a short boat ride or kayak paddle from the Onerahi boat ramp. A visit to Matakohe is suitable for all age groups. You can walk the island on well-marked tracks. Be sure to allow at least two hours for your visit.
Are you passionate about local wildlife and keen to support our conservation work on Matakohe Limestone Island? As a community group, we welcome all support, from hands-on volunteering to donations and corporate sponsorships. Every contribution makes a difference and is greatly appreciated. Supporters like you inspire and empower us to continue driving meaningful change.
